Exploring Australia

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MARITIME MUSEUM

There’s lots to see and do at the South Australian Maritime Museum. You can experience conditions under which early emigrants sailed, stand on the earth of Port Adelaide’s original streets and feel the history of a port in the making. From mangrove wetland of the Kaurna people to international commercial port,  live the events, milestones, and working lives of a unique community through remarkable objects and stunning photographs. View original Victorian showcases with handwritten labels prepared many years ago by the honorary curators.

Play the penny arcade.

Climb the 1869 lighthouse and see panoramic spectacular views.

Fishing
Discover the story of South Australia's fishing industry. See our ‘fishy’ exhibitions Catch of the Day and Rock Around the Pot.

Vessels
Ask about dolphin cruises on the Museum's tug Yelta, South Australia’s last working steam tug built in 1949.   Experience more history on the water through other heritage vessels  ST Yelta and Archie Badenoch. These South Australian maritime family favourites are available for charter, school groups and holiday cruises.

The Mosquito Fleet
For over 100 years Ketches, the small craft dubbed the Mosquito Fleet, plied South Australian waters doing the work of present day trucking rigs and bulk cargo ships. Ketches endured beyond steamships and railways but bulk handling and containerisation brought an end to the era. See exhitions with beautiful brass navigation instruments, photographs and equipment of the Mosquito Fleet.

Action Stations!
The Royal Australian Navy is an important force in Australian history. The Museum showcases South Australia’s naval history from the legacy of British naval traditions to the rise of a colonial South Australian Navy. It tells of establishing a national Navy after Federation and the pivotal contribution of South Australians.

Migration
How can we fathom what it is like to leave our homeland, either through choice or by force? Many of us can, and Australia is always growing with those who still do. Our collection houses a diverse range of objects, documents and photographs intimately linked to those who travelled by sea to arrive in South Australia.
