Folklore of the Pub
Local legend has it that during the early 1900’s a group of women found this hotel to be very conveniently located.  Unable to leave their homes for long, it seems, they would purchase a jug of beer from the local Kent Hotel. As they made their way back along the street,  with jug in tow, there were pauses for chats, no doubt sharing a drink or two along the way. So Cannon Street earned the name ‘Jug and Gossip Street’. The hotel’s exterior was modernised to an ‘Art Deco’style in the 1940’s.

The Port Anchor Hotel still retains its good old fashioned service.
