Pine Creek is a small town, at the Junction of Stuart and Kakadu Highways, 90 kms north of Katherine and 248 km south of Darwin. Gold was discovered at Pine Creek during construction of the Overland Telegraph Line in 1872.
Pine Creek boasts the largest number of bird species in Australia.
In the town centre, the water gardens in the old railway corridor have tropical plants with inviting picnic tables overlooking five linked ponds.
A heritage walk around town, gives an insight into the early days when close to 1500 Chinese and 100 Europeans lived in the area. Buildings are signposted with their history. National Trust Museum and the Railway Station Museum are of interest.
The mine lookout shows the abandoned Enterprise Pit, filled with water where 764,000 ounces were extracted. Old hand dug Chinese mines can also be seen.
Umbrawarra Gorge with its rocky pools and sandy beaches is accessible to all vehicles in the dry season.
