MOUNT LOFTY SUMMIT
Mount Lofty Summit, 710 metres above sea level, is a “MUST SEE” when visiting Adelaide. The view from the summit lookout takes in the city all the way to the sea. At night as the city lights up, you can see a kaleidoscope of coloured fairy lights. It is only 15 minutes from the city centre.
The Visitor Centre at Mount Lofty Summit assists visitors make the most of their time in Adelaide. The friendly staff are a wealth of information on what to see and do in the Adelaide Hills and further afield in South Australia. They have suggestions on walking trails that meander through bush land – like the Heysen Trail and shorter walks to Cleland Wildlife Park and Waterfall Gully. There is information on hills villages to visit and attractions, wineries, shopping, restaurants, cafes and more.
The gift shop is an ideal spot to purchase souvenirs and gifts. Quality Australian made gifts are on display, some are made locally in South Australia.
The Summit Restaurant serves breakfast, lunches, morning and afternoon tea every day and dinner Wednesday to Sunday.
Mount Lofty, the highest peak of the Adelaide Hills was sighted and named by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802. In 1885 an obelisk standing some 16.5 metres tall, was built to replace the wooden surveyors’ trigonometric marker rising from a cairn of stones.
During the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 the kiosk and restaurant at the summit were destroyed. The fires caused loss of life and millions of dollars of damage.
The new visitor centre was opened in January 1997.
