OAKBANK RACES
Racing just twice annually, Oakbank Picnic Race Meeting has been a South Australian institution for over 130 years. It’s not to be missed!
It’s the biggest country race pilgrimage anywhere in the world. Oakbank’s size and colour with it’s 80,000 strong crowd rivals the Melbourne Cup.
The cars start arriving before dawn on raceday - up to 40,000. Campers usually arrive a few days earlier and enjoy catching up with old friends and new ones.
There are marquis dotted about, sponsors and guests and the Punter’s Retreat Marquee – a sensational food and wine extravaganza – see website for package details.
The Centre of the course becomes a "Disneyland"; a place of fun and fantasia for the young and the young at heart.
Facilities include:
• On-course totalisator & bookmakers
• Mistral Vision Super Screens
• ATM & EFTPOS facilities
• Disabled toilets
• Gourmet food & wine court
• Breathalyser Screening Unit
• Amusements
• Reserved car parking areas
Since Tormentor won the first Great Eastern Steeple around the undulating hill course back in 1876, the race has always been run here on Easter Monday except during World War 2 when the army occupied the course so it was run at Victoria Park and Morphettville.
The tradition continues...
